While I was getting my kids off to school this morning (yes, we survived the first month of back to school), I smelled to first smells of fall in the air. I noticed the cool breeze drifting through my window, or should I say rushing through my window? It was rather chilly! Seems to me that this year the seasons have just jammed their way into our lives instead of easing their way. Suddenly it was summer and wham, now it’s fall!

Four schools will offer full-day kindergarten program for 2005-06.

In an effort to give kindergartners a jumpstart on success in school, four Rio Linda Union School District schools will offer a full-day program next school year.

The traditional kindergarten program has a 200-minute school day but at Allison, Joyce, Larchmont, and Oakdale, the day will be extended to 315 minutes (excluding recess and lunch).

The June 5th groundbreaking ceremonies for the new Aerospace Museum of California were well attended and are stirring up a renewed interest for many who have lived in the area for some time, and new interest for new residents and visitors living or working in the area.

Students at Hillsdale School in the Rio Linda Union School District learn taekwondo as part of an afterschool program funded by $160,000 in grants to 10 RLUSD schools in North Highlands in a legal settlement between the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office and Burger King, Inc. District Attorney Jan Scully visited Hillsdale recently to get a firsthand look at the “in defense of learning” program that includes the martial arts program and an afterschool Homework Club.

It seems ironic that in order to become educated about what is in the governor's budget, you have to ignore the misinformation being distributed by the education unions.

Sitting around a large U-shaped arrangement of tables, eight to ten teenagers engage in a lively exercise of the democratic process as they plan their next community service project. These kids are members of the Leadership Development Academy (LDA), a program operated by the Sacramento County Probation Department’s Neighborhood Alternative Center (NAC) and funded by a grant from the Juvenile Justice Crime Prevention Act (JJCPA).

Before you know it summer is long gone and the first day of school is here. You have just been school shopping with cranky kids, grumpy parents and long lines.

Don’t panic. I have some helpful suggestions that can make your life a little easier. As a working mother of children I had some pretty busy days. My children are in different schools, they have different schedules and different needs. You have heard the saying that time spent in preparation is never wasted. Well it’s definitely true. The more I prepare the less I panic.
