There’s a new kid on the block of Sunrise Blvd already saturated with restaurants like Marie Callendars, TGI Friday’s, and Fuddrucker’s. It’s one of five locations set to open in the Sacramento area including one in Folsom and one in Roseville by the end of this year. Nearby Citrus Heights got first dibs - we’re talking about Smashburger.

The phrase, “easy as pie” originated in 19th century America, supposedly because pie was easy to eat. Notice that the phrase wasn’t coined because of its ease to make. Jane Royer, the wife of Pastor Bob Royer of Rio Linda Church, will agree I’m sure. However, in spite of the numerous hours it must take, she gladly gives her time and effort to making thousands – that’s right, thousands – of pies each year.

Unbelievable! It’s December and Christmas is upon us. We’ve made it through the Thanksgiving holiday and now it is time to channel all our energy into finding that perfect gift for all our special some ones. It never seems to matter whether they’ve been naughty or nice, I still end up buying a gift.

As difficult as it is during this busy season, I do think it is possible to remember to keep a cheery attitude and have a smile on my face, even though my plate is so full. After all, that’s the meaning of Christmas.

More than 4,000 elderly, disabled, or homeless people who receive food stamp benefits in Sacramento County can now purchase prepared hot meals in addition to making their grocery store purchases using their Electronic Benefit Transfer (EB T) card. The new program, EB T Restaurant Meals Program, was implemented on May 1, 2006 by Sacramento County’s Department of Human Assistance (DHA ).

Sacramento is only one of a few counties in California to offer this program.

Heading out to a restaurant salad bar could set you back $10 but students at Frontier Charter and Elementary School now have the tasty lunchtime option of getting a salad for just a $1.50. “The salad bar has nutritious foods that taste great! It is a good way to pick your own food,” said eighth grader Sarah Granados. The salad bar opened earlier this school year as part of an ongoing effort by the Rio Linda Union School District to teach students healthy eating habits.
